Ten Things to Do
Local Market Towns
Visit Leek, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Buxton.

Local Shows, Fairs and Festivals
Every month there is an antiques fair at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton. The Manifold Country Show takes place on the hills between Ilam and Alstonefield in early August and you can see the best local bulls and sheep, and watch the sheepdogs sorting out some badly behaved ducks. The Bakewell Show is a huge affair. In early July, the Buxton Festival hosts top class opera and also runs late-night jazz sessions. You can even participate in the World Toe-Wrestling Championships in nearby Wetton!

Wells Dressings
Wells Dressings start in early May in Tissington, and there is at least one each weekend until early September.

Sailing and Windsurfing
These can be enjoyed at Carsington Water near Ashbourne.

Swimming
There are public pools in Ashbourne and Buxton. For the hardier visitors, lovely dipping pools are available in the Rivers Dove, Manifold and Dane.

Steam Railways
The Churnet Valley and High Peak Railways both run steam trips in season.

Cycling
Cycle paths run along the old High Peak Railway tracks. Cycles can be hired at Parsley Hay for the run to Tissington, and there is also a track along the Manifold Valley.

Historic Houses
There are beautiful houses and gardens to visit in every direction. See our links pages for several suggestions.

Bouldering and Rock Climbing
This is a very popular area for both sports.

Snooker
On a wet day, stay at home and play snooker on our lovely antique three-quarter size snooker table.

Jigsaws
We have a collection of interesting and challenging jigsaws.
